Project: FISU 25th Winter Universiade 2011

Overview

Gearhouse Broadcast was awarded the contract to provide the technical production facilities and broadcast transmission for the 2011 25th Winter Universiade. The games took place in Turkey between 27 January and 6 February 2011 and involved nearly 3,000 sportsmen from all around the world.  The Organising Committee approached Gearhouse when they were looking for a broadcast solutions specialist to cover the Games opening and closing ceremonies, along with all the outdoor snow events.

Solution

In addition to the core contact, Gearhouse built and staffed the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) as well as providing location services such as studios and up linking facilities.  The IBC facility comprised of a Master Control Suite, Quality Control Suite, 6x Final Cut Pro Edit Suites, Server based Media Management system, HD Studio, Digital Editing and Storage, Format exchange and DSNG Satellite facilities as well as a Satellite Farm to Up-link the outgoing program feeds.  All the venues production was distributed to EBU for worldwide distribution and by TRT (Turkish State Broadcaster) for the Turkish market.

For the outdoor events, Gearhouse Broadcast provided state-of-the-art HD OB facilities.   Each unit was equipped with 8 HD Sony HDC-1500 cameras, Sony HDC-3300 Super slow-motion cameras and EVS XT2+’s.  Additional equipment included a CAMCAT high speed camera at the Ski Jump and a 100m Rail Camera at the Cross Country.

For the opening and closing ceremonies, Gearhouse provided 12 mainline Sony cameras and a HD Spidercam suspended 70m above the stadium.  Two cameras were mounted on Jimmy Jibs whilst the two Steady Cams utilised the Riedel Radio Link System. The event was supported by a technical and engineering crew who were deployed across the seven venues for the 10 day event.

Outcome

Working closely with the Organising Committee, Gearhouse Broadcast provided high definition technical facilities and expert staff for each of the seven snow disciplines -  Alpine, Biathlon, Cross Country/Nordic Combined, Sky Jumping, Ice hockey, Snow Boarding and Free Style Skiing

Feedback

Eamonn Dowdall Managing Director at Gearhouse Broadcast said, “We were awarded the contract by the organising committee, based on our track record in delivering broadcast solutions for major international sporting events and on the strength of previous performances at live sporting winter events such as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver”.

“There were many challenges working in temperature that regularly dipped below minus 25ºC - extreme temperatures effect professional broadcast equipment, and keeping everything functioning presents a particular challenge - but we were confident that we had the expertise and experience to deliver all the technical facilities required to meet TRT’s needs”.

“Our goal was to supply cost effective broadcast solutions for our broadcaster. The choice of our equipment suppliers for these types of sports event is always a carefully considered decision; we choose the most reliable technology on the market every time”.

“We can meet the most complex, mission critical project requirements on location anywhere in the world, and in the most challenging conditions. Some of our recent projects have included the FIFA World Cup South Africa, Red Bull Air Race World Series, World Tennis Masters Series, Australian Open Tennis in Melbourne and the Confederations Cup in South Africa”.
