Project: UEFA Euro 2008

Overview

Gearhouse Broadcast’s Project Solutions built and installed the Technical Operation Centres (TOC’s) used for the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament.  There were four stadia situated in Austria in Vienna, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt and Salzburg and four stadia in Switzerland in Basel, Zurich, Bern and Geneva.

Gearhouse Broadcast provided high definition equipment and service personnel which included three broadcast engineers and two wiremen for each of the eight Technical Operation Centres of the UEFA EURO 2008, managed by UEFA Media Technologies, subsidiary of UEFA appointed to produce Host Broadcasting Operations.

Solution

Each TOC comprised seven broadcast racks of equipment, with a total of fifty-six racks. Each rack contained a 96x96 Pro-Bel router, Harris glue products, 3 x 14” Grade A Sony monitors, 3 x WFM 700 Tektronix waveform monitors, 8 x 23” Vutrix monitors, Comms systems by either Riedel or Clear-Com and Evertz fibre and SPGs. The TOC racks were all tested at Gearhouse Broadcast’s UK headquarters two months prior to the tournament.

Outcome

Gearhouse Broadcast also provided the multilateral and unilateral cable installation for the UEFA EURO 2008. The broadcast contract involved laying over 900 kilometres of cable across the eight stadium venues throughout the host nations of Austria and Switzerland. Gearhouse Broadcast selected Belden cable using a variety of cable types including Triax, Video, Audio, Cat 5 and Fibre in varying lengths.

Feedback

Andre Nel, Senior Projects Manager at UEFA Media Technologies said, “Gearhouse Broadcast delivered the Technical Operation Centres, the Cable Installation solution and the RF Commentary solution for the UEFA EURO 2004 and FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, so we were more than confident in their abilities to provide first class technical solutions for the 2008 tournament”.
